Happy Friday Readers! I am sorry for missing the last couple weeks and leaving you hanging, but things got a little crazy. Exciting things are happening behind the scenes in Nick and Emmeline’s story however, so I’ll give you a sneak peek in this week’s Friday Fictioneers. I was so excited to see this prompt, because it fits just perfectly with what I envisioned happening next!
Thanks as always to Rochelle Wisoff-Fields for providing the prompt, and to Dale Rogerson for this week’s photo!
A Delicate Arrangement
“Are you with me?” The words echoed in Nick’s head as he helped Emmeline to her apartment door. She was still pale but a grim determination had replaced the fear on her face. She paused, her keys stuck in the lock.
“Do you need help?” Nick reached forward to turn the key but Emmeline snatched at his hand.
“No! We have to be careful.”
“Em, you’re not making any sense. What are you worried about?” He shook off her hand and opened the door.
Emmeline braced herself, then gasped. Her entire apartment was filled with flowers.
Hello, dear Readers! Is it really Friday already? This week has flown by! Time again for Friday Fictioneers, picking up Nick and Emmeline’s story where we left off last week with mysterious messages, someone named Constantine, and chatty receptionists.
Happy Friday, Readers! As promised, I am back (on time) with Friday Fictioneers! This week we have an interesting photo prompt, courtesy of Claire Sheldon. (Who saves staples like that?)
We are still following our interesting couple, Emmeline and Nick, who are now home from the hospital after Emmeline’s accident. Their trials are far from over…
Thank you to Rochelle for always providing our Friday prompts!
“Bless my soul, Emmeline Price, what happened to you?” cried Mary Ann in her thick Boston accent. “Who’s your man?” She leaned over the desk. In a faux whisper, she said, “He’s a fine piece of real estate!”
Emmeline sighed covered her eyes with her hand while Nick hastily turned his laugh into a cough. “I was in an accident, and this is Nicholas Ramsey. Do I have any messages?”
“Hmm?” Mary Ann tore her gaze from Nick and popped her gum bubble. “Oh yeah, loads. All from a guy named Constantine. Weird name.”
About mid-afternoon two Saturdays ago I was struck by a sudden thought. I had completely forgotten to post Friday Fictioneers! I am so sorry for skipping a week! But then, even worse, I was unable to post last Friday either…so we missed two weeks! In light of this, I am posting last week’s prompt today, and will be back on schedule tomorrow.
And keeping up with my theme, I will be continuing Nick and Emmeline’s story. Emmeline is going home today!
Thanks to Rochelle last week for not only posting our prompt but also providing our photo!
Anything You Need
“I brought extra pillows in case you need them.”
“I’ll be alright, Nicholas.”
“Is it too hot in here? Or too cold? I can adjust the temperature.”
“It’s perfect, Nicholas.”
“I picked up your prescription from the hospital pharmacy. The doctor said to keep track of your pain levels. Do you need some now? I have water in the back.”
“Not now. Thank you, Nicholas.”
“Are you hungry? Because I can..”
He stopped mid-sentence, surprised by her use of his shortened name. She smiled painfully at him. “Just take me home please. We are blocking the hospital pick-up lane.”
“Miss Price is sleeping, but stable. You can sit with her if you like.”
Nick didn’t need told twice. Quietly he entered her room. In the corner her heart monitor beeped slow and steady. He sat down beside her bed, fiddling with the rosary still in his hands. “Stay with me, Emmy,” he whispered.
Moved by an urge to be doing something, anything – he pulled out his phone and opened his last search – “How to Pray the Rosary.” He didn’t believe in this stuff, but it was better than nothing. Hesitantly, he started to pray.
Happy Friday my lovely readers! I may be on vacation, but I wouldn’t skip a week of Friday Fictioneers if I could help it! Especially after last week when I left Nick and Emmeline in a precarious position…again. (sorry, not sorry). Be sure to check out last week’s post if you missed it.
As always, special thanks to Rochelle Wisoff-Fields for providing us with these weekly prompts and this week to Sarah Potter for the photo. Even if it isn’t too obvious, I do take some bit of inspiration of each week’s photo in my story.
Pass The Time
Nick was stuck in the waiting room, again.
Behind him he could hear the clock ticking. Every second felt like an eternity, every tick reminded him of the fading blips on Emmeline’s heart monitor.
He fidgeted with his fingers.
“Here you go, son.” Nick jerked his head up to see a stout old woman in a housecoat offering him a string of beads. A crucifix dangled from the end of them. Nick recoiled.
“I’m not religious,” he blurted.
“That your woman in there?”
Nick nodded and the rosary fell into his hand. “It will help,” she promised before shuffling away.
Happy Friday, dear Readers! I’m back again with Friday Fictioneers and the continuing drama of Nick and Emmeline. Special thanks to Rochelle for always posting a prompt for us and Karung for this week’s photo. Enjoy this week’s story!
My Heart Skipped A Beat
“I love you, Emmeline Price.”
Nick’s words hung in the air. Beside the bed, the heart monitor faltered and skipped a beat before increasing in speed. A luminous smile broke out on Emmeline’s face and she squeezed Nick’s hand tighter.
Nick returned her squeeze, suddenly feeling light-headed. His own heart beat fast in his chest. He thought maybe he should sit down, but his body was rooted in place.
“Oh Nicholas, I-” Emmeline stopped as a spasm of pain wracked her body. The heart monitor skipped a beat, then another.
“Nurse!” Nick cried, alarmed. He wasn’t going to lose her.
